Dew Claw Removal
Dewclaw removal is the surgical excision of the first digit (innermost toe) on a dog's limbs. Dewclaws are most commonly seen on a dog's forelimbs, but they may be present on all four limbs, or not at all (it is not unusual for dewclaws to be missing).
Frequently Asked Questions:
When can my dog undergo this procedure?
3-5 days of age is the ideal time for a dewclaw removal procedure because the nervous system of the puppy is not yet fully developed, although the procedure is still possible with older puppies and dogs as well.
How are prices determined?
Prices vary on this procedure depending on whether or not the dewclaw is "attached" or not. Attached dewclaws have bone in them and are rigidly attached to the rest of the paw. Detached dewclaws do not have an associated bone and are usually hanging loosely on the side of the dog's leg. "Attached" are slightly more expensive Prices also vary based on age. A puppy that is 3-5 days old does not have a fully developed nervous system, and is too young for non-emergency anesthesia, therefore the overall price will be lower. A puppy older than 5 days, or an adult dog, will need to be under full anesthesia in order to undergo a dew claw removal procedure; this necessitates a higher price.
